Redesigning Sinosplice

I meant to mention this sooner, but as is so often the case around here, I got caught up doing other things. Most people in the China blogsphere are well-aware of Sinosplice, a blog and Chinese learning resource by Shanghai-based expat John Pasden.

Last week Sinosplice.com went live with a completely new design, and I’m quite proud to have been a part of it. John’s blog is one of the blogs I “came to China on” and have continued to follow in my time living here. Interim John and I have become friends, and I was quite excited when…

What I’ve been up to

It’s been brought to my attention that I’m not updating enough, so much so that friends have begun to worry that something has happened to me (sorry Zak!).

Something has happened to me, and more on that later, but that is not the reason for my blog absence. I’ve simply been inundated with new projects. That coupled with a quick trip up to Dalian last week that left me without Internet for a few days, has kept me focused on other things.

Busyness has been a theme of late, a fact that has been reflected in my decision to

Creating wallpaper

I’ve created a new Flickr set for a little hobby of mine – creating desktop/Web site backgrounds or wallpapers. They are admittedly quite amateurish to the amazing stuff already out there, but I get a kick out of it.

So much of my day is spent designing stuff with a very specific purpose, it’s nice to have an outlet whereby I can let my creativity just go where it may. Alright, how much creativity can there be in a simple textured background? Not much, but the majority of the ones in there now were just quickies. However, I’m looking…

It’s time to confess – Web 2.0 style

TwitfessionsThe other day an idea for a new site hit me, and as I was waiting for some deliverables from a client to arrive and didn’t have much to do, I figured – what the hell.

The site is called Twitfessions, and essentially it tracks and displays any Twitter tweets that are tagged with #confession. Basically it’s a fun way to relieve yourself of that little secret or unspoken sin you committed – in a very Web 2.0 way.

Twitter, for those that don’t know, is a micro-blogging service – so, instead of…

Danwei.TV: My latest project

Just want to take a moment and brag about a cool new project I’ve been hard at work on: Danwei.TV.

Most foreign folks living in China, or with any interest in China, are bound to know Danwei.org, possibly the most widely-read English-language blog about China, and many of you have also likely watched Danwei-produced and -affiliated videos (Sexy Beijing, The Shanghai Beat, etc.).

Previously, all video content was constrained to the main Danwei.org site and its written-word layout, and though a Danwei.TV site had been set up, it operated in much the same way. But no longer!

It…

A few changes around here

Just a quick note to reference a few changes I’ve made to the site.

First: you’ll notice that I’ve changed the comment submit layout. When I initially designed the look of this site, I was eager to try some new things, and so had the comment submission form stuck at the top of the comments.

This was stupid – I realize this now. It just never fit with the flow of how people read I don’t think. Rare is the occasion that I read a blog and wish to comment without first checking out what others have said. Additionally,…

The Humanaught v3 Has Arrived

My eyes are cooked, my ass is numb, my fingers are cramped… the redesign is done!

For anyone not reading this in their RSS feed reader or on a splog, the changes should be pretty apparent. But I’m going to run through some of them anyway :-)

First, I should mention, I’m not a big fan of switching themes. I think a blog develops some of its character from the look of it, and if it’s changing all the time, I feel it takes something away from it all.

That said, I really wanted to…
