I have absolutely no memory of meeting anyone Chinese before I hit college. Yep, I think I lasted 21 years of my life not meeting a single member of the most populated country on earth. I am not sure if that speaks towards China’s previous emigration polices, or the cultural ineptness of my hometown.

Same for me. I actually ended up marrying the first Chinese person I ever met (in college), but that is another story. We didn't have any Asians in our school. 90% of the students were of Italian descent. So, I think it was my hometown that was the problem. Not much diversity.

It is hard to express the feelings of having a life in a place that is far from your own in any aspect. That place was even never in your imagination and suddenly you are there. A new life started before you realized it. Time goes by, you still feel you are an outsider sometimes. However, you get used to the new and it is no longer new at some point. You occasionally think to yourself that maybe it is time to go back to the previous life yet you keep staying right there.

@Kate: Cheers :-)

@Phil: I totally forgot to mention that I had no idea that the whole TAM2 thing happened in my life time. For some reason I was under the impression that the events of June 4th were long, long ago (possibly even in a galaxy far far away).

Ahhh.......... China for us was "What are we gonna do next?" in our lives. We were stuck in a rut and something had to change. 6 months and a 2 week ESL teachers course later we were in a land we knew very little of also. As far as we knew, China was famous for some bloke standing in front of an army tank back in the late 80's, a long wall that could be seen from space, great food which is far too expensive in our small country town and alot of people. Little did we know we would end up in a modern, beautiful city full of foreigners with plenty of things to do. A shame we only have 2 weeks left!!!!!!!!!
