@Chris: Find out about the ones in Dalian or the ones in Suzhou? With Dalian it was trial and error. When I first got here it was after travelling in a number of different countries, and they all played English-language films. I (naively) assumed that China operated in a similar way - didn't realize then how developed the Beijing dub industry was.

But after walking into all the cinemas in You Hao Guangchang (and beating back the <strike>dates</strike> hookers) I ended up in Warner Wanda at Olympic Square.

When Maggie came into the picture, I just had her open the newspaper and call the bigger cinemas. Much less leg work (and fewer hookers).

Upon moving to Suzhou I did the same (walking into the cinemas in the major shopping areas - like Guanqian Jie), but nada. Then I had heard about this new IMAX place opening up and its location (foreigner-smothered SIP) seemed to indicate they'd have Western movies... and then life got in the way and I promptly forgot all about it until about a week ago I was talking with some friends about wanting to see 10,000 BC and they said it was playing there.

Bit of a long explanation eh? haha.

@Jakob: Yeah, I went to see a film in Shanghai and left when I saw the price (I used the same argument as you). However Dalian's were reasonable (30-40 RMB) and this new place here in Suzhou is not bad either. Even with some good surround, nothing beats the big screen.

Sweet! Here in Shanghai the cinema costs about 80 kuai... I always think, hey, that's at least 8 DVD-9's, and I bought a nice home cinema with Dolby Digital...
So I'm watching always everything at home.

Hah! How'd you find out about it! I lived in Dalian for nine months, and it never actually even occurred to me to seek out such a place. I don't think Xiamen's got one. :(
