Travelversary, how I got where I am

So, that little bump in the road with the site being down marks my third year of running this blog. Well, technically I didn’t start writing on here until I arrive in China in January… but thehumanaught.com is technically three this week.

Additionally, this week marks another anniversary of sorts. It was November 11, 2003, that I left Canada and began travelling for five months living out of a backpack and on various kind souls couches, spare beds, backyards and floors.

The recognition that it’s been four years since that fateful day has led me to take a moment and…

If This Is Torture, Thai Me To The Wall…

So… I have not been all that great with the LJ entries lately. I can only blame it on being more conservative with my money – I was in London and pounds aren’t cheap! Here, Bangkok, it’s cheaper though… hell, who am I kidding, everything is cheaper here!

I left Florence Saturday morning and spent the day travelling to London. All went well and Maryann was home to greet me when I arrived at her flat, which is always a nice touch. It was awesome to see her and her flatmates again. It’s sort of bizarre how you happen upon…

Smiles On The Horizon!

First things first: Barcelona Photos

And next.. just wanted to say quickly that I arrived safely in Firenze (Florence) last night and am staying with the most wonderful couple, Francesca and Gianluca. It is hard for me not to love anyone that has a beautiful authentic Tuscan meal and wine for me, never mind a queen size mattress and a hot shower!

I had a bit of a scare the other day when I checked my bank account and it read $3.50. This was not alleviated by the fact that I only had 15 euro in my pocket. I…

Dos Cerveza Por Favor

Alright, so it’s January 26 and I’m writing this while sitting on a balcony overlooking the bustling Las Ramblas in Barcelona, wearing a T-shirt and squinting at the screen because of the sun that is bathing me. It’s about 20 degrees and just absolutely beautiful here. The best part: I’m only spending about 3 euro more a night then I was in Athens, and having a heartily better time.

I got to the ferry in Patras last Thursday and boarded Ancona, Italy, bound. The ferry was a newer one than the one I took to Greece and thankfully had security…

Athina Wanna Go Back To Italy

The Photos

So yeah, if you ever get the chance to go to Athens and it’s free to go, and you can stay in a hotel or something… by all means, go for it. But, if you’re just looking to kill some time before going to Thailand… just go to Thailand. There have been parts of Greece that I’ve really liked, but all and all… it blows. True enough it is a bit cheaper than Italy (Athens is 10 euro a night instead of Rome’s 15), but honestly… it’s cheaper because it’s a slum. And I guess one of my…

How Frigin Cool Am I!!!!

http://www.canoe.ca/Travel/Europe/UK-Ireland/2004/01/20/319087.html

That’s right folks – officially published travel writer Ryan McLaughlin. :-)

Stay tuned for more as the editor is “looking forward” to what I come up with next.

I just got back from a day trip to Meteora – it was incredible. It’s this place in sorta North Central Greece that has all these monestaries up on top of these clifts.

Looks like this…

(not my photo.. but I have lots.. no worries… I just have to format them).

I met this really cool guy named Richard who runs a…

Italia, There’s Something About Italy

Slowly sipping my second bottle of Mythos Hellenic Lager Beer I bought for 0.85 euro at the Mini Mart here in Athens, I wonder two things: (a) Will I ever make it back to Amalfi, quite possibly the most beautiful place I’ve been and (b) what the hell movie is this with Cybil Sheppard, Joe Piscapo and Greek subtitles.

I arrived in Athens at about 7:30 p.m. after travelling for over 36 hours – I’m beat, but when I say there was a power outlet in the “common room” of this hostel, I just had to get this entry out,…

Roman Around

Yesterday morning (alright, noonish) Cathy and I took the metro down to the Colosseum. Holy crap! You walk out of the station and it is RIGHT there sitting in its 2,000-year-old glory. Standing there in its shadow really made me appreciate my trip. I mean, how cool is that – the frigin Colosseum! We decided it’d be worth the 10 Euro to actually get inside it, and as much as I’m quickly running out of funds, it was worth it I think.

It was really cool to picture it full of Romans shouting for blood. It was built in the…

French Wine In Roma

It just turned midnight and I’ve now been away from home for more than two months. Surrounded by chatter in a number of languages, I write this while in the “common” room of the Yellow Hostel in Roma, Italy. My day leaving Dublin went much smoother than the day I arrived there. I was preparing to head to Paris and start my killer-budgeted Mainland Europe trip spending nearly 20 euro a night on a hostel – not something I was looking forward to. Checking my e-mail quickly before heading to the Dublin airport and in turn to Paris, I had…
